What Does the Future Hold for Brock Lesnar in WWE?

By Evan Coughlan October 1, 2017 (No)
Believe it or not it has now been over five years since Brock Lesnar returned to WWE the night after Wrestlemania 28. In that time, Lesnar has had one of the greatest runs in pro wrestling history, of course this is helped by the fact that he doesn’t work every single pay per view and only ever appears on a few episodes of Raw in the lead up to a PPV. Lesnar remains an enigma in the WWE, fans are still unsure if they should boo or cheer the Minnesota native and lately they have been quite underwhelmed by his WWE Universal title defences. With Lesnar’s WWE contract up after […]

On The Mat – WWE Battleground 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan July 23, 2017 (No)
Firstly what a great name for a Pay Per View, Battleground, sounds important and impactful, however, there is one problem with Battleground and it has nothing to do with the name of the event. The problem is Smackdown is a bit shit right now and has been for a few months. It just seems like all the good momentum that Smackdown had going into Wrestlemania has been destroyed in the months since. This is really disappointing and unfortunately I don’t see it being a trend that WWE will be able to fix anytime soon. The fact that they have given the WWE Championship to a glorified jobber in Jinder Mahal […]

On The Mat – Great Balls of Fire 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan July 8, 2017 (No)
The hype for this Raw exclusive pay per view has been dominated by the build up for the WWE Universal Championship match featuring Brock Lesnar, in his first defence of the title he won from Goldberg at Wrestlemania back in April. Lesnar is up against Samoa Joe who has looked like an absolute monster since winning the No. 1 contendership at Extreme Rules. Of course, this is just one of several matches taking place this Sunday at the American Airlines Centre in Dallas, Texas, so let’s see if Great Balls of Fire is an event not to be missed. Neville vs. Akira Tozawa (with Titus O’Neil) for the WWE Cruiserweight […]

On The Mat – Money in the Bank 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan June 18, 2017 (No)
Although Money in the Bank is one of WWE’s newer concepts, compared to the Royal Rumble, it has quickly become one of the most highly anticipated events on the WWE calendar. Thanks in no small part to the unpredictable nature of who is going to win the coveted briefcase and when are they going to cash in their championship opportunity. This year WWE are showcasing two Money in the Bank ladder matches, the traditional men’s match and for the first time ever, a women’s Money in the Bank ladder match. This Money in the Bank event is a Smackdown exclusive pay per view and with these two ladder matches, as […]

On The Mat – WWE Extreme Rules 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan June 4, 2017 (No)
In years gone by, the words ‘extreme rules’ were synonymous with the glory days of ECW, however, nowadays the WWE have made those words their own, and since 2009 have presented us with an annual, watered-down version of Paul Heyman’s ECW hardcore heaven. Calling this Pay Per View ‘Extreme Rules’ is somewhat ridiculous, especially given the fact that this PPV seems to be getting less and less extreme as years go by. Momentum on Monday Night Raw has stalled in recent weeks, as we begin to see more odd segments that make little to no sense at all. In saying that, the WWE have done this in the past and […]

On The Mat – WWE Backlash 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan May 21, 2017 (No)
In years gone by, Backlash was the main Pay Per View coming out of Wrestlemania and, on an occasion or two, even managed to upstage the granddaddy of them all. Iconic rematches, like Backlash 2000, when The Rock beat Triple H for the WWE title with help of Stone Cold Steve Austin comes to mind. Sadly, the Attitude Era’s long gone and the Backlash of old is too. Saying that, this Smackdown exclusive Pay Per View, which takes place in Chicago, does have many intriguing matches, and were going to take a look at everything on offer. Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English The Perfect 10’s debut on the main roster […]

On The Mat – WWE Payback 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan April 30, 2017 (No)
In previous years, the WWE have come out of Wrestlemania with all the momentum in the world, only to somehow manage to blow it before the next pay per view comes around. Thankfully, that’s not to be the case this year as they’ve managed to keep people’s interests going into Payback, this Sunday, and this is in no small part to the momentum that Braun Strowman currently has after his destruction of Roman Reigns. This, combined with the media grabbing stunts the WWE have had Strowman pulling off over the past few weeks, means this year’s Payback is one of the most anticipated post-Mania Pay Per Views of recent memory. […]

On The Mat – The Ultimate Wrestlemania 33 Preview

By Geoff Dorrity April 2, 2017 (No)
30 years ago, Wrestlemania catapulted itself into the stratosphere of sports entertainment by breaking a then record of holding over 93,000 fans in the Pontiac Silverdome to see ‘The Irresistible Force’ take on ‘The Immovable Object’. During the show’s main event, fans witnessed history as Hulk Hogan scooped up Andre the Giant and hit his great nemesis with a 525 pound earth shattering slam that was heard around the world. Despite it being billed as the biggest main event in the history of sports entertainment, in its aftermath it was rated as the worst worked match of the year by wrestling critic aficionado Dave Meltzer. This tells us two things, […]

On The Mat – WWE Fastlane 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan March 5, 2017 (No)
It may not seem like it but, yes we are actually on the road to Wrestlemania and we only have one more pay per view before the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ takes place in April. With previous years, Fastlane acted as a buffer for all of the various storylines that were being hyped up before the big one. In both 2015 and 2016, the event was used to tee up number one contender spots for title shots, however this time we have a match that may actually see the heavyweight title change hands, making things a little less predictable. In the past, it was made abundantly clear that Roman Reigns […]

On The Mat – Elimination Chamber 2017 Preview

By Evan Coughlan February 12, 2017 (No)
The Elimination Chamber match was introduced in 2002 by then Raw General Manager, Eric Bischoff, and some 15 years later the Chamber match is still going strong with it’s seventh installment kicking off tonight in Phoenix, Arizona. Now while we’d like every match to take place inside the structure that houses 2 miles of chain, only the main event for the WWE championship will do so this time around. The WWE have put together an intriguing card for this Smackdown exclusive pay per view so let’s take a look at the matches taking place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena and who we see coming out on top. Nikki Bella […]
