10 Things You’re Doing Wrong At Work – Simple Life Hacks

We all know it…. Work can suck sometimes, but have you ever thought that maybe you could be doing something wrong and making your life more difficult than it needs to be.

Hopefully these 10 points on what you could be doing wrong and some solutions to them, can help make your work life a little easier.

1. Lateness (Otherwise known as Punctuality!)

This is a major problem when it comes to your working life, you need to be punctual in order to start your day on the right note. By getting to work late, you delay your whole day, much less, you don’t make a very good impression for your boss and co-workers.

A simple and efficient way to get over this, is to set your alarm earlier to allow more time for you to get ready and for commuting, because goodness knows, traffic in Ireland can be pretty unpredictable. Also, consider going to bed earlier so that you get a good nights sleep and can be fresh for the day ahead.

2. Eating

Eating has a huge effect on your productivity, concentration and effort in working life.

The more unhealthy food you eat, the more likely you are to be tired and lackadaisical. I know a quick McDonalds or KFC can feel good in the moment, trust me, but it can have a negative effect on how you actually do your work.

Stick to more protein for meals and try change up what you eat. For example, you could have oats with some honey for breakfast, a salad for lunch and a lean meat for dinner with some vegetables. This kind of food will help you stay energized throughout the day and remain focused on the tasks you have to do.

3. Listening Ability

This may not sound like something you could be doing wrong at work, but do you actually listen when senior management tell you what to do. Or does it go in through one ear and out the other?

Hopefully, with the meal ideas above, you’re concentration will improve and with this comes the simple idea that maybe you could listen a bit more astutely and really take in what you’re bosses are asking you to do.

4. Cups of Tea

This is a funny one. You could be having TOO many cups of tea while at work, if that’s even possible.

Tea is known to have calming effects on your mind and can be quite comforting, especially to Irish people, but too many cups of tea could make you a little less motivated.

So maybe, it’s time to put the tea down and sip on some hot or cold water with lemon in it. This not only detoxes your body, but also helps you to stay hydrated throughout your day.

5. Responsiveness

Something that we have all experienced at one time or another, whether it wast at your first job at the corner shop or in the financial advisory job you have now. Your responsiveness is basically how well you respond and react to the situations at hand and how quickly you respond to the things your boss asks you to do.

The faster you respond to the tasks asked of you, the easier your day will become. You won’t have things hanging over your head and not to mention, you will impress your boss.

6. Being Rude

This is definitely something you could be doing wrong at work and you may not even know you’re being rude.

Just take some time before you say things. I know in the heat of the moment words can just fall out of your mouth before you even realise what you’re saying, but take a deep breath before you respond to difficult situations.

thief-of-joy

Also, this is cliché, but remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ it’s such a small thing, but people really do appreciate it, just say it to everyone, even to the post man delivering your mail.

7. Accountability

Be accountable, full stop.

Don’t blame things on other people when things go wrong or don’t go the way you planned, you need to be accountable for what you do you and the decisions you make, own up to it and people will respect you.

8. Time-Management & Exercising

Time management and exercising are other factors in what you could be doing wrong at work. As mentioned above, you could set your alarm earlier in order to make it in to work on time, but you also need to make time for exercising, as this allows you to remain fit and healthy.

Exercising also helps you to remain a happy person and have a positive outlook on life, you really can’t beat a few positive endorphin’s! What I suggest is finishing work on time and committing to a gym class at least 3 times a week and over the weekend doing some workouts of your own. If your not a beefed up gym lover, fear not, there are still loads of alternative ways to stay fit.

9. Managing Stress

It says it right there in the title, you could have too much on your plate, which in turn, causes you to be stressed, you do not want that at work.

My advice? Don’t take on more than you can handle, make sure to leave time for yourself and for your family or whatever may interest you in your personal life.

Take on enough to do your job efficiently, this is a sure fire way to help you reduce stress and improve your work life.

10. Too Many Breaks

I know it’s hard, but maybe you need to cut down on the breaks you have at work. We’ve all sat on the toilet at one point or another just to kill time, but maybe these breaks are becoming a bit too frequent.

Remember, you’re at a job, supposed to be working, your getting paid, you NEED to be actually doing your job and taking the right and appropriate amount of breaks allowed at your workplace.

Maybe you can relate to a few of these, if so, try and take on some of our advice and hopefully it will help improve your working life!
