5 Worst Things to Hear on a First Date

Living in Ireland, the closest you get to a first date most of the time is a drunken shift inside or outside a nightclub late on a Saturday night. With any bit of luck, someone will have enough of their wits about them to realise if the scene is a bit too much from the outside looking in. Other than that, maybe a trip to the cinema or something else not too formal seems to be the norm. But we are getting slightly better at dating thanks to the web and Tinder.

Here are five things that the lads hate hearing on those first dates:

Anything at all related to Ex’s

At the first mention of ‘when I was with…’ or ‘my ex-boyfriend…’, whether good or bad will get the new boy thinking. His mind will immediately go from whatever the topic of conversation initially was to the panic of ‘Am I doing this right/wrong?’, ‘Will I mess up like he did?’. It’s not a nice position to be in because tiptoeing around might lead to an awkward date which nobody wants.

Cool Girl Talk

Nothing makes a lad cringe at a girl more than when she hits him with all her favourite text speak. Does anyone else remember the phase of the ‘bebo stunnah xoxo’ when everything was typed without vowels and followed by kisses. That eventually became a way of speaking and we never truly recovered. All the old favourites from that time – fab, hun etc still work their way into some people’s vocabulary today. Play it simple, speak how you were thought, not how people comment under your 13 year old self’s profile picture.

Self-degradation

It’s no secret that lots of girls are very self aware about their appearance and will constantly fret over it or point it out. Don’t do it on a first date. The reason he is there in the first place is because he doesn’t care about that but constant reminders of it will make him think it’s worse than it is like the girl does or just annoy him. Nobody will fully accept you until you can accept yourself.

‘Whatever you want..’

Just like it drives every girl wild I’m sure, the lack of suggestions for what to do or where to eat will drive anyone insane. Somebody has to take the bull by the horns and say we are going here or we are doing this rather than spend 20 minutes arguing over where to go before resorting to getting a drive thru and eating it in the car like you do every other time.

Last but not least the worst thing any man can hear on a first date is….

Nothing At All

The absolute worst possible thing that a girl can say on the first date is nothing. There is nothing more painstakingly boring than being the one doing all the talking and it gives off a serious hint of disinterest. Ask questions, make stupid jokes and just make it look like you are enjoying yourself especially when you are.
