Exams are well and truly over for most students. The heat of the sun blazing through the cloudless sky (not so much in Ireland) has made students anxious to go out and find their own summer adventure through some good old fashioned inter railing.

Before you rush out the door to find an adventure its important to know what you need for a successful summer of inter railing and not to learn things the difficult way like many of us have before, myself included!

Buying Tickets

To save money when inter railing, it is important to check what type of travel ticket suits your needs. Such as, the single country InterRail ticket that allows you to travel within one of the 30 European countries or a Global Pass which can be used across 30 countries.

For further information on where to purchase these tickets, check out the Single Country InterRail Ticket here or the Global Pass tickets here.

Picking A Backpack

When choosing a backpack, the main thing you should be thinking about is how long will you be inter railing for as this will help you decide on the type of backpack that you will need.  Seen as you will be hoping on and off across different types of transport, it’s also really important to check with the airline you are using to make sure there aren’t any restrictions on the size or weight of your backpack.

Universal Travel Adapter

Every time I travel across Europe the most useful item I have brought with me is a Universal travel adapter. Most European Countries use the type C or F which contain two round pins on the socket. Rather than risking not being able to charge necessary items such as your mobile phones, which are often used to download maps, a suitable adapter is absolutely necessary for your inter railing trip. We would recommend the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charger which works perfectly as an EU wall plug.

Security Padlock

When traveling abroad, especially for the first time, it’s always important to be careful of your surroundings. Make sure to have a lock on your suitcase or backpack at all times. A padlock is most useful  in hostels, as it can be used on lockers to keep your valuables safe without lugging them around whenever you go out. Padlocks with keys are good for locking your valuables, but if available it’s usually best to get a padlock with combinations as it will eliminate the chance of losing the key.

Travel Towels

You really will be doing yourself a massive favour by bringing a travel towel, as not every hostel will provide them. The travel towel will also of course be useful at beaches or when outdoors.  It’s important not to bring a regular towel from home because it will be heavy and take up a lot of unnecessary space in your luggage. Bringing a light and absorbent towel makes inter railing a hell of a lot easier.

Download Travel Apps

It is just so much easier to plan trips by using travel apps. You will end up using them on a daily basis while inter railing, everything from translation apps to understand a foreign language to online maps to get to your destination. XE Currency is a currency exchange app that access live exchange rates, historical charts of currency fluctuation and calculation of currency conversion, one you really can’t do without.

The Google translate app is also a handy one to have on your travels as it can be used to learn different languages or quickly translate basic terms and greetings. There’s also a function in the app that can translate words using the camera on your device. For more great ideas we would recommend you check out these Apps that are Essential for the Modern-Day Explorer.

With these basic yet essential items, you’ll be well prepared to hop from one city to the next and ensure your summer of inter railing is a memorable one!
