Male Grooming In The Modern World

Looking good has taken a whole new twist for the boys. Out with the rugged and scraggly look that used to be the way to a girl’s heart or even just a girl’s bed and in with the manicured, pedicured, waxed, bronzed, gelled and flawless look that is now expected.

Starting at the very top, the old school mop of hair is a thing of the past. Now, the very least expected is some form of ‘faded’ hairstyle absolutely coated in some kind of wax, gel or mousse. It must be to perfection quite literally meaning not a hair out of place lads.

I suppose we can be grateful that we haven’t hit the male make up phase….yet. It seems like facial accessories are a good way to go now and prescription glasses are being replaced by clear lenses that are simply on your face for that extra hipster look.

Clothing wise, casual clothes have changed in Ireland from a tracksuit pants or a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt. The days of casual actually being casual are behind us. If your trousers aren’t looking like they’ve been painted on to your legs by someone, then they are simply no good. Tight chinos, skinny tracksuits, skinny jeans…do you see the trend?

Footwear is interesting too because it’s changing on a continuous basis. Something big hits every year but at the moment in seems that dress shoes are making a big comeback while on a more laidback level, running shoes that are never going to be used for running are a popular choice amongst the current sheep in society.

As far as being ‘done up’ goes, suits have been put on the back burner a little bit. Now, every man out there will admit that he loves a good excuse to throw on a suit and look like he has a bit of style but some have gone to another level. The aforementioned skinny trousers accompanied by a nice blazer and a swanky looking shirt have taken over from suits which you may spot at your next day at the races, wedding, christening, barmitzvah etc. The suit will have to bide it’s time before making a comeback.

These are minimum requirements nowadays. There just is no room for poor dress sense in 2016 so if you know someone who still likes to go to the nightclub in his jersey or a hoodie, help him out. Bring him shopping or show him to the local hairdressers where he can get a nice fade. He’ll thank you for it in the long run.
