Must-See Marvel Movies Coming Out This Year
January 31, 2017 (No Comments) by Evan Coughlan

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is something to behold. Over the years, there’s been, what seems like, hundreds of Marvel movies. Some good, some great and, well let’s face it, the occasional stinker (I’m looking at you 2013’s The Wolverine).

The Marvel juggernaut doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon though, with three cinematic releases due to hit our screens this year; the most movies Marvel have released in a single year since the inception of the MCU in 2008. Let’s take a look at these three new Marvel movies and what they have in store for us.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Release Date: May 5th

If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 can replicate the success of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie then Marvel are on to yet another winner. The light-hearted comic relief of the first movie was one of the reasons so many people fell in love with the Guardians, with the likes of Chris Pratt and Batista giving excellent accounts of themselves. The main cast from the first movie return for this sequel, plus a couple of new additions. Very little is known about the plot to the movie so far, however some snippets which have been released focus on the origins of Chris Pratt’s character Peter Quill AKA Star Lord.

Finally we have to talk about an area of the movie that is probably more anticipated than the plot, characters, or visual effects and that is the soundtrack. With the soundtrack for the original movie going platinum around the world, director James Gunn has stated that ‘the soundtrack in the second one is better’. So lets hope he’s right and that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 measures up to all the hype as the countdown continues to its May 5th release date.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Release Date: July 7th

Okay, let’s get something out of the way before we start here, for this writer there will only ever be one Spider-Man and that is Tobey Maguire (I’m sure a lot of you would agree). Let’s just forget about those Amazing Spider-Man movies and say that Maguire’s spidey, for me, will never be beat and nothing will ever change my mind on that one.

Good to get that out of the way, so now we have a new Spider-Man with the young English actor Tom Holland donning the mask of New York’s favourite web-slinger. After making an appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man is getting his own movie this year and judging by the first trailer it looks like it will be a massive success.

Similarly to Guardians of the Galaxy, little is known about the plot other than Spidey will be facing off against a new enemy in Vulture with a little help from his mentor Tony Stark AKA Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr. This movie has the chance to be the blockbuster of the summer.

Thor: Ragnarok

Release Date: November 3rd

Thor: Ragnarok, if you can believe it, will be the 3rd standalone Thor movie in the MCU and if you know anything about Norse mythology, like I do (not really I Googled it), then you’ll know that this movie may be the last Thor movie full stop.

The events in this movie follow on from Avengers: Age of Ultron and sees Thor imprisoned on another world without his hammer. He must outlive a gladiatorial duel against his old friend, The Hulk, in order to return to Asgard in time to stop the villainous Hela and the impending Ragnarok. (hopefully that made some sense!). I’ll admit that seeing a duel between Thor and The Hulk is something that will definitely be worth the watch.

Thor: Ragnarok will without a doubt cap off another incredibly successful year for Marvel as there cinematic universe continues to grow and grow.
