Should Men Use Fake Tan? What a question and what a topic. As the world we live in today becomes more image orientated and superficial, it’s only natural to ask whether men could do more to make themselves look better; whether it’s shaving/waxing their legs or using fake tan. Now, in my opinion, I feel you’ve got to do what makes you happy and what makes you feel good and if wearing fake tan does that for you, then, wear it, regardless of your gender.

However, I know that people think that men wearing fake tan isn’t masculine and something that only women should do. In this post I will dive in and find out whether men should be using tan. I will look at both sides of the argument, so that you can make your own mind up.

I’m sure most of you know this, but essentially fake tan is the application of chemicals to the skin to produce an effect similar in appearance to a suntan.

Benefits to Using Tan

  1. Safe to use

The first and most important benefit of using a self-tanner is that self-tanning has no harmful effects on your skin. This is a win when you consider sitting in the sun for ages under the UV can cause you to have major skin issues.

  1. Quick

Simply put, fake tan is quicker than suntanning or using a sunbed. There are also products now that speed up the process, so you’re not waiting for your tan to develop.

  1. Improve your skin’s health

Most tanning lotions nowadays have a hydrating and moisturising effect on your skin and some even include anti-oxidants and fruit extracts.

Should Men Use Fake Tan – Yes

I would say a lot of the younger generation today would be on this side. I feel they tend to be more accepting, open and prone to peer pressure. Statistics show that 27% of young guys from 16 to 24 have already experimented with a tan-enhancing product.

Men are now seeing it as something that does enhance their look. It makes them feel good as it does women. They feel they look better in photos and feel they are more attractive looking. Who are we to judge?

It’s also important to note than more and more companies are creating fake-tan catered to men which means that there is a demand for i. Men using fake tan is on the rise.

Even male celebrities use fake tan, look at Brad Pitt, George Clooney and David Beckham. Those guys are considered some of the best-looking guys in the world and guess what? They’re all tan.

Should Men Use Fake Tan – No

I would tend to say that this opinion is probably more popular with older men or men that have never had an interest being labelled as ‘girly,’ or metrosexual,

Most guys pretty much have no idea how the complex process of fake tan gets applied or how fake tan even came to be the way it is and maybe that’s why some think men shouldn’t be using tan.

The idea behind the fact that men shouldn’t be using tan stems from the fact that fake tan started out as a female only product and so men never really took much interest in it, so why should they now?

I know, I know, that’s sexist – but a lot of men currently would tend to have the same feeling; they think that men shouldn’t be using fake tan simply because it’s girly or too feminine or a ladies product. An idea that is changing slowly. (Earrings or manscaping…for example)

However, it’s important to note that, Australian company Bondi Sands has just released a new ‘everyday gradual tanning foam’ for men.

If you are a man and you do fake tan or I have somehow miraculously convinced you to start fake tanning, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t overdo it – there’s nothing worse than seeing someone that is noticeably darker than their natural skin tone…male or female.
  1. Pick the right product – ask for help if you’re unsure.
  1. Apply just once a week – do this to your entire body and then apply twice a week to your face.
  1. Take it slow – when it comes to fake tan application, less is more – you can build up your tan gradually.

Should Men Use Fake Tan – Conclusion

I’ll leave it up to you to decide, should men use fake tan? I suppose one thing to think of is the entertainment value. Women look silly enough when they over do the fake tan so imagine how funny guys will look when they get tangoed.
