The Lowdown On Flirting In The Workplace

Some years ago my girlfriend told me that I was too stupid to know when I was flirting with someone, or when someone was flirting with me. She may have a point! Like most men, flirting does not come naturally to me. It is an example of just another thing that the fairer sex seem to be better at. It is a minefield at the best of times but when it comes to flirting in the workplace it takes on a whole new level of complication. Whether it be a cringey comment that leaves you red faced in front of your co workers, or the lonely walk to the HR department for your sexual harassment hearing, one needs to tread carefully when it comes to workplace flirting.

For many readers, this topic will not be an issue, for example if you are a farmer this is probably not the type of thing that keeps you up at night. But if like me you work in an office based environment, then you will more than likely have some experience in this area. In most of the cases that I have witnessed, the male in the situation has been either hopelessly oblivious or hopelessly deluded. All joking aside though it may be a slippery slope you are going down because when it comes to your workplace, there is a thin line between harmless flirting and creating a toxic working environment. If you do find yourself in a situation that makes you or other co workers uncomfortable in your day to day job then there is a real issue. The problem is that people are different. What may be harmless flirting for one person could be creepy and uncomfortable for another. The last thing anyone wants to be known as is the workplace creep. Another danger is that if the flirting is ongoing then work nights out can become dangerous. Maybe one party thinks its leading somewhere while the other doesn’t. Or maybe it does lead somewhere in which case work takes on a whole new level of complication. Either way you need to think very carefully before you decide to flirt your way through the working day.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that while women may see flirting as harmless fun, 99% of men will see it as the woman showing an interest in him when this may not be the case. In fact more often than not the male is left disappointed and confused. It can also bring up real problems if co workers or management begin to feel it is having a negative impact in the office or making people feel uneasy at work. Seeing it from a distance can be awkward at the best of times. All these problems already and we haven’t even mentioned that sometimes in the office flirting goes on when one or both parties are in a relationship. That is when the creepiness and inappropriateness goes off the scale. And no doubt the inevitable judgement from your holier than thou co workers will begin.

All in all, even thinking about the complexities of simple workplace flirting gives me a headache. I think the office is a complicated enough place without flirting with your workmates. But I am admittedly very unqualified in this area. Maybe there are pro flirters out there whose flirtatious ways get them through the day. Maybe it gives people a little self esteem boost and they don’t let it get out of hand so it works for them. Who am I to judge? One thing I am certain of though, is that if you catch me flirting in the workplace, I probably won’t even realise I am doing it because like most men, I am clueless when it comes to matters like these….and I’m ok with it. In this case maybe ignorance really is bliss!
