When deciding where to go for a nice lunch in a place that isn’t Subway, McDonald’s, Supermacs, etc. in Maynooth, there are a few factors that can make the decision a bit easier:

Price – You’re not going to spend a load of money on lunch when there are so many cheaper alternatives.

Food – If the restaurant has a theme or certain menu that doesn’t appeal to you, you’re not going to want to go. It’s simple really.

Quality – This probably is the most important factor in your decision to be honest. You won’t spend on bad food, it’s just illogical.

Therefore, I decided it was best to look up Tripadvisor (great website that). It’s so helpful in deciding what’s good and what’s not. Having had a look, I decided to go straight to number 1 on the list of restaurants in Maynooth, Bistro 53, and my God… it did not disappoint.

Service

Immediately upon arrival, the servers were extremely amicable, showing us to a seat without hesitation. They were on hand without any real delay to take our order. They also were constantly available to top up glasses of water that had a fruity twist, which was a delightful touch.

The staff were very friendly and always close if anyone needed any assistance. This in itself is great to see, but what was even more impressive was the fact that this was essentially during ‘lunch rush hour’ so almost every table was full of hungry customers. It was a real show of the quality of Bistro 53 as an establishment that they value their quality of service so highly. The guest rating’s speak for themselves and mean that the restaurant has been awarded with multiple Certificates of Excellence.

It took probably 15 minutes between the time we arrived and the time we were served our first course. Now that’s service. Anyone thinking of opening a restaurant would do well to use Bistro 53’s service as a template. It was that good.

Food

The menu is a lovely blend of different tastes and types of food. After much deliberation over what to start with, I decided on the wild Irish west coast mussels.

This was no normal plate of mussels though. It was an absolute monster of a plate, which seemed almost bottomless. This isn’t even an exaggeration. It was massive, which is obviously what we as diners love to see. They were gorgeous as well, with its authentic seafood taste and the touch of the marinade only enhancing the flavours.

Moving onto the Main, there was a heavy debate over which protein to go with (because gains are important and I totally don’t sound like an assh*le by saying!).

I eventually settled with the crisp-braised pork belly with mustard, savoy cabbage, baby potatoes and apple sauce.bistro-53-restaurant-maynooth-dinner It was the best decision I made all day. The pork was cooked to perfection, and the cabbage and baby potatoes complimented it perfectly. Even the apple sauce, which I was apprehensive about – I’m a simple man with a simple pallet – worked so well with the rest of the dish.

Adding to the food was the bar in the middle of the restaurant. This was a great addition, as it provided the option of going up to get the drink you wanted if you felt compelled to do so. Honestly, it seemed like they thought of everything.

Atmosphere

The ambience in Bistro 53 was surprisingly laid back, but at the same time it felt quite intimate. Despite being very busy, I personally felt like I was in my own bubble when I was eating. It was surreal, but in the best way possible.

The music was quietly playing in the background adding to the ambience, and the chatter of the other customers didn’t interrupt the atmosphere in a way that crowded Friday afternoon restaurants tend to do. But if your looking for more of a late night stylish experience, the bar staff are happy to assist and put together one of their tasty cocktails, the raspberry cosmopolitan is regarded as one of the best on Trip Advisor. They also regularly have live entertainment, most recently from Jo Petit & Dreamband.

Cost

How much was all this top quality food, service and atmosphere you ask? €11.95! Can you believe it? I couldn’t, and yet there it was on the register. How great is that? It was great to see that a person could walk in and get a fantastic, filling lunch at a wonderfully affordable price. Plus, Bistro 53 is a very classy restaurant so you feel even more satisfied to spend less than €12 on a great meal.

Overall

I can’t recommend the place enough and I can say with complete honesty that there was nothing served which was below a very high standard. Top marks all around to Bistro 53 for being a brilliant establishment, one which I will definitely visit again.
