Limerick is a county that has continued to spawn some of Ireland’s greatest musical treasures and it was rightly awarded the title of ‘National City of Culture’ in 2014. It is a thriving hub for both local and international musicians to share their talents and sure enough there are some great gigs lined up throughout the coming year in the city, and here’s five that you definitely can’t miss!

5) All Our Exes Live in Texas

Brace yourselves, this all-female four-piece from Sydney with a penchant for Folk music are coming to Limerick to shake things up the Aussie way! Hannah, Georgia, Elana and Katie have been on the music scene since 2014, combining their lyrical talents, smooth vocals, ukulele, accordion and mandolin to create some slick Folk vibes.

The ladies have toured all around their native Australia and abroad they have supported Backstreet Boys in the US and Passenger in the UK. The group are now setting off on their own tour to showcase some of their most successful EPs including Sailboat and Tell Me. A fierce female foursome with a unique deliverance of folk jams; this is one not to be missed.

The band’s début album ‘When We Fall’ is out now and available to download.

4) Mundy

Offaly man and Country star Mundy will be bringing us back to his beginnings as he stops off in Limerick for his nostalgia tour entitled ‘Jelly Legs 21’ later this year. In 1996 and at the age of just 21, Mundy released his first album entitled ‘Jelly Legs’. The album included the song ‘To You I Bestow’ which became a success after featuring on the best-selling soundtrack of Baz Luhrman’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ film adaptation. His second album ’24 Star Hotel’ went triple platinum in Ireland and his songs ‘July’ and ‘Mexico’ were two of the biggest standouts, receiving heavy airplay in 2002.

It also put him on the radar for touring as he joined the likes of Oasis and The White Stripes on tour. Mundy’s most iconic song that is still sung across the pubs of Ireland today is undoubtedly his 2006 rendition of  Steve Earle’s ‘Galway Girl’ which gained momentum again in 2008, reaching the number 1 spot in the Irish Singles Chart and staying there for five weeks solid.

His most recent, self-titled album ‘Mundy’ is out now for download.

3) dREA

Indie/Zen-Rock singer-songwriter Damien Drea or dREA as he is better known is a local Limerick man and was the former frontman of the band Vesta Varro, before they went their separate ways. dREA has always had a love of music growing up and has been professionally involved in music for a number of years with his début album ‘Bravest of All’, released in 2014. In 2013 he set out touring independently and in early 2014 he supported Bell X1 in their sold out Irish gig in Vicar’s Street.

He went on to play other festivals and gigs including the Other Voices Music Trail in Derry alongside Neil Hannon and Marina and the Diamonds. dREA has been building on his success and received a shout out as one to watch from Music Week UK along with winning the prestigious Hot Press ‘Song of the Year’ Award and signing a licensing deal with the US TV network CBS. He is currently working on his next album which will no doubt bring more success to his name.

dREA’s song ‘Animal’ is out now and well worth a listen.

2) Nathan Carter

He may have been born in Liverpool but Nathan Carter is the adopted Country music King of Ireland. Nathan has been performing since childhood, winning the All Ireland Title for Traditional Singing at the tender age of 10. His professional career kick-started in 2007 upon the release of his début album ‘Starting Out’ and his rendition of ‘Wagon Wheel’ helped to boost his career further in 2012 with his album of the same name entering into the top 3 in the Irish Album Chart.

In 2016 Carter also won a MOBO Award for ‘Best Single’ for the song. Since then, he has continued to climb up the album charts in both the UK in Ireland and has even made television appearances in the like of Rós na Rún on TG4. The future looks bright for this young singer as he continues on his way touring and you can catch him along with others such as The Stunning at this year’s Mungret Community Music Festival.

His latest album ‘Livin’ the Dream’ can be downloaded now on itunes.

Should you be in need of some simmering Alternative Rock vibes this year instead, look no further than Limerick based band; Raging Sons. This five-piece rock ensemble was forged in 2012 and the lads have been cooking up a storm creating their first EPs, getting ready to set sail. Damian, Fintan, Colum, Steve and Adam together with their drums, bass guitars and Fintan’s husky and sleek lead vocals have been successfully compared in style to artists such as Oasis, The Doors and even Rock heroes Muse.

They have been non-stop busy, touring across Ireland in support of The Riptide Movement, Ryan Sheridan, Scouting for Girls and more. In 2014 they released their first three track EP entitled ‘LUST’ to a sold out gig at Dolan’s in their native Limerick. The band will be back to gig in Dolan’s along with artists like Exit 28 and The Kadillacs to help raise funds for Laura Barry, a Limerick jockey who’s battling cancer.
