6 Gigs You Need to See in Dublin This January

Now that the holidays have finished, and everything is slowly returning to its usual routine. It can be great for all you music lovers out there to head out to see some of the best artists visiting Dublin this January. You can unwind from the hectic first week back at work and jam out to some of the best tunes in town.

Bring along friends, family members or even that new guy or girl at work who you have had your eye on for a while. There is something playing for everyone this month. Below I shall list six of the most exciting acts and gigs playing near you this month.

1. Adrianne Lenker and Squirrel Flower

Adrianne Lenker is a singer and songwriter from America. She has been perfecting her craft since she was ten years old.  Adrianne sees song writing as a vital part of the music industry and something that is still very needed today. You can expect nothing but the best from the masterful lyrics of this artist. Her music can be identified as Alternative or Indie. Her latest album abysskiss is a collection of her life over the past two years as she documented it while creating this album.

Another person playing on that same night is Squirrel Flower also known as Ella Williams who is a musical artist coming from Boston. Her music is described as indie and alternative. Her album Contact Sports was released in 2016. This upcoming artist is making a big impression on everybody around her. These two artists complement each other well. So, check out those tickets quickly.

2. Hazel O’Connor

Hazel O’Connor is a British singer and songwriter. She became famous in the early 1980’s. Her hit singles were ‘Eight Day’ and ‘Will You’. As well as a few other famous songs.  Her new album Hallelujah now is out now, and she is touring the country so that everybody can hear it. Her music can be described as New wave, alternative, folk and new-age. A bit of something for everybody to enjoy. Her lyrics relate to her past, her life now and anecdotes about the music industry.

She has enchanting qualities as a performer and catches the eye of anyone watching her off stage. Being an actress as well and starring in the well-known movie called ‘Breaking Glass’’, it is almost like she is mixing theatre into her performance as a singer. So, gather all your friends and get ready for a night to remember.

3. Rudimental

An English drum and bass band. The band members are Piers Aggett, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden and DJ Locksmith. Recently winning the Mercury Prize in 2013, Rudimental has also received plenty of platinum awards for record sales in several countries.  They have had two hit singles in 2018. The first being ‘The Sun Comes up’ featuring singer James Arthur and the second being ‘These Days’.

Their new album is called Toast our Differences and is said to feature more upcoming collaborations. Rudimental promise a great night filled with some great beats and an opportunity for dancing so bring along all your friends.  Reviews mention that the night is unforgettable thanks to the positive energy and charisma that this band omits onto the people around them. Their connection and positivity as a group can be almost infectious on stage. Do not forget to check out tickets asap as they are selling out fast.

4. Years & Years

This pop band was founded in London. Its members consist of Olly Alexander, Emre Turkmen, Mikey Goldsworthy, Noel Leeman and Olivier Subry. Their music has been described as mixing electropop, R&B and 1990’s elements. They really have a strong connection to the eighties sounds of synth pop but what really grabs your attention is their very own take on British electronic R&B.

One of their biggest hit singles was ‘King’ from their album Communion which reached number one on the UK charts in July 2015. Their recently released album is called Palo Santo which features singles such as ‘Sanctify’ and ‘If You’re Over Me’. They are playing two days in Dublin so make sure to head on over and pick the date that suits you best.

5. Walking on Cars

This Irish band focuses primarily on pop music and consists of the following members Patrick Sheehy, Sorcha Durham, Dan Devane, Paul Flannery and Evan Hadnett. They released their debut single ‘Catch me if you can’ in 2012 which led to the bands popularity today. They have a new album being released in April 2019 called Colours.  Reviews rave about how Walking on Cars was an outstanding performance.

It’s always good to support Irish talent while you are going out this January. This band which started out playing in their hometown of Dingle county Kerry is sure to have you up and dancing on your feet within minutes of starting.

6. Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and actress. Raised in New York City, Azealia released her music through the website Myspace until her song ‘212’ went viral leading to her success. Her second studio album called Fantasea 2: The Second Wave awaits release with the lead single ‘Anna Wintour’ being released earlier in 2018.

Banks has also been known for some of her controversies on twitter with multiple people and with a variety of issues at hand. Her rapping style is very unique and her vocal ability strong. If you are looking for something to chill out to then this is the place to be on the 22nd.
