Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned relegation dog fight? Every game’s just more exciting when there’s a proverbial 6 points on the line, and although we’ve not even opened our Christmas presents yet, some Premier League teams are already making strong cases as to why they’ll be relegated this season. Although it’s by no means a foregone conclusion, here’s who we at TheSharpe believe will be playing in the English Championship come August 2017. Hull Newly promoted teams are always favourites for relegation, so the fact that we’ve picked Hull City out here won’t come as a huge surprise to anyone. Hull have only managed to bulge the net […]

This weekend marked the 9th consecutive win for newly promoted Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, a record which no team in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 or the Eredivisie has been able to match this season. Die Roten Bullen, also known as the Red Bulls, beat Schalke in an exciting encounter at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening to go top of the table; they now stand 3 points clear of last year’s champions Bayern Munich. So Who Are RB Leipzig? The club was founded on the 19th of May 2009 following a partnership between global energy drinks company Red Bull GmbH and SSV Markranstädt, a small […]

The O’Donovan Brothers

It truly has been an exceptional week for Irish sport. The Irish rugby team produced a heroic effort and tamed the mighty All Blacks for the first time in 111 years, the national soccer team conquered Austria for the first time since 1963 to move top of their World Cup qualification group and our very own Conor McGregor became the first man in UFC history to be crowned a dual-weight world champion. With all of that it would be quite easy to forget about the rest of the stars that helped put Irish sport on the map in 2016. Worry not, as we at have put together our top […]

Where have all the World Class Footballers Gone?

The simple answer, Spain. To find the very best players in the world, you simply have to look at the front three of the respective Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona. While Barcelona is built on skill and speed, Real Madrid is more focused on power and speed but equally as deadly all the same. What is World Class? That begs the question, what qualifies as World Class these days. Do you have to have more goals beside games in your stats? Do you need to be a solid 8/10 performer every single week? As you can imagine, it’s a little bit more complicated than that. Here’s what I think […]

The North London derby is a classic in English football that always delivers on thrills, spills, controversy, big decisions and cards, oh how we love a few cards between these cockney heavyweights. History Of The North London Derby The derby has been in existence for 120 years, with Arsenal first winning the contest one nil way back in 1896. Some say the rivalry really started when Arsenal moved to Highbury, a stadium which was only a stone’s throw from White Hart Lane (albeit a fine 4 mile throw!) Looking back at some of the classics there aren’t many pictures that capture the derby moreso than Thierry Henry sliding towards the […]

With the Champions League back in swing this week we look at the major winners and losers in the last round of fixtures again. Here’s our roundup of who we think came off best and worst in Gameweek 3 of the Champions League. Arsenal I know, it was ‘only’ Ludogorets but still, you can only beat what’s in front of you. Arsenal’s 6-0 trouncing of the minnows was a real statement of intent from a team who are in an excellent run of form and with every game are just looking more and more dangerous. The reason Arsenal are one of my big winners this week is because of the […]

Some cynics would look at Ireland’s EURO 2016 campaign and ask what was won or where is the trophy but it has to be said that it was a very successful campaign for the boys in green. Ireland is not a major footballing nation by any stretch of the imagination which is evident when you consider how big it is just to qualify for a tournament. Some of that team went over to France with doubters and as bit part players in the team and have come home as heroes. Jeff Hendrick was the standout player for Ireland while Robbie Brady stole hearts with his goal against Italy followed by […]

With this weeks Champions League well underway we’re looking to refresh your memory about who had a great round last time out and was pure muck! Let’s get into it right away. Winner – Celtic  For years these guys have been stealing a living at the top table of European football. Let’s face it, they’re not the Celtic of old that would regularly and deservedly compete at the latter stages of Europe’s top competitions. The Scottish league has just fallen by the wayside due to the money being pumped around other leagues. We thought we were finally being proven right when Barcelona stuffed them a fortnight ago but low and […]

Liverpool VS Man United

Is there any game, in English Football, more anticipated than Liverpool v Man United? We at TheSharpe don’t think so. A fixture that’s produced more highlights than ‘Reeling in the Years’, football fans will no doubt be tuning in in their droves come Monday night. Well, you may put a hold on that diet, ‘cause the fact that Liverpool v Man Utd is on Monday night can only mean one thing… Monday pints! It’s never advisable to go too mental of a Monday, but if you do decide to go out for “just the one”, here are a few places we’d recommend: Dicey’s (Harcourt Street) Ah Dicey’s! ‘Tis a great […]

Who'll The Premier League Breakout Superstar This Year?

Last year, nobody would have tipped early on that Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez would be the stars of the campaign but I think we’ll be going back to the norm this year with the big spending mega rich clubs heading back to the top of the pile and Leicester sliding back down to mid table obscurity. Hopefully they can hold their own and even shake up the Champions League a little bit now that they know who they will be playing and got a nice little group. However, I’m going to go away from Leicester with my tip for who I think will be the big dog of the […]
