On The Mat – WWE Extreme Rules 2017 Preview
June 4, 2017 (No Comments) by Evan Coughlan

wwe-extreme-rules-header

In years gone by, the words ‘extreme rules’ were synonymous with the glory days of ECW, however, nowadays the WWE have made those words their own, and since 2009 have presented us with an annual, watered-down version of Paul Heyman’s ECW hardcore heaven.

Calling this Pay Per View ‘Extreme Rules’ is somewhat ridiculous, especially given the fact that this PPV seems to be getting less and less extreme as years go by. Momentum on Monday Night Raw has stalled in recent weeks, as we begin to see more odd segments that make little to no sense at all. In saying that, the WWE have done this in the past and then somehow end up pulling it out of the bag. So, the question is, can WWE pull this one off and get that momentum going once again?

Well without further ado, let’s take a look at the matches taking place at the Royal Farms Centre in Baltimore, Maryland this Sunday.

Rich Swann & Sasha Banks vs. Noam Dar & Alicia Fox

cruiser_two

In an attempt to make both of the WWE Network exclusive shows, 205 Live and the Cruiserweight division more interesting, WWE have thrown the best female wrestler on Raw, Sasha Banks into a storyline involving the Cruiserweights, Rich Swann and Noam Dar. This is a smart move by WWE as it immediately gets more eyes on the Cruiserweight division and combines two storylines into one. Banks and Fox have been squaring off on Raw for the last few weeks, with neither star able to get the upper hand on their opponent. Fox has reunited with her former flame, Noam Dar and it seems like they will be the new power couple in the Cruiserweight division.

While this could be an exciting match-up, especially if Swann and Dar are allowed to display their Cruiserweight moves during the match. It’s hard to see this bout being anything but filler, with the victors having little impact on the grand scheme of things. So with that being said I expect the power couple of Dar and Fox to emerge as the victors.

Prediction: Noam Dar & Alicia Fox

Neville vs. Austin Aries in a Submission match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship

cruiserweight

In the only feud that has been going in WWE since before Wrestlemania, Austin Aries will try for the third Pay Per View in a row to defeat everyone’s favourite Geordie, Neville for the Cruiserweight Title. After Aries won their match at Payback due to Neville getting himself disqualified, the next night on Raw, Aries defeated TJ Perkins (or TJP as he’s known). After the match, TJP attacked Aries and attempted to to injure his leg. Soon after, Neville announced that TJP was deserving of a title shot after his beat down of Aries, but he would have to beat Aries again to do so. TJP couldn’t get the job done, thereby giving Aries another shot at Neville’s Cruiserweight Title in Maryland.

After Aries defeated TJP once again on 205 Live, it was revealed that Neville and Aries’ match at Extreme Rules would be need to be won via submission. To be honest, this feud has got pretty stale over the past few weeks, and if Aries doesn’t defeat Neville this Sunday then I feel it’d be best for both men to move onto greener pastures. I expect Neville to retain and move onto a new feud with someone new, TJ being the most likely candidate.

Prediction: Neville

The Hardy Boyz vs. Cesaro & Sheamus Steel Cage match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship

hardyz-shesaro

Finally we have a match that is befitting of the Extreme Rules name, and it just so happens to feature Team Xtreme themselves! At Payback, Cesaro and Sheamus turned heel by attacking The Hardy’s after the match and the next night on Raw explained their reasoning behind their attack, calling The Hardy’s a novelty act. After winning a Number 1 Contenders match on Raw a few weeks ago, Cesaro and Sheamus have been bad mouthing the Hardy’s at every turn. The stipulation for this match-up was decided after Matt defeated Sheamus in a one on one match on Raw a few weeks ago and Matt decided that this match should take place inside a Steel Cage.

With The Hardy’s still being ridiculous daredevils and with the agility of Cesaro and the brute power of Sheamus, this tag team match could very well be the match of the night. If WWE are going to let The Hardy’s go ‘Broken’, then it might be a smart idea to make them lose the titles.

Prediction: New Raw Tag Team Champions Cesaro & Sheamus

Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley in a Kendo Stick on a Pole match for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship

bayley_alexa

Yes, you read that right! This fight’s a Kendo Stick on a Pole match, and no, this is not WCW circa 2000 being booked by Vince Russo, this is WWE in 2017 being booked by Vince McMahon. Why are they having a Kendo Stick-on-a-pole match you may ask? Well, it’s because Alexa attacked Bayley with one a few weeks ago on Raw and that’s as good a reason in WWE land as any. For anyone unaware, the objective of Kendo Stick on a Pole match is simple. The match isn’t over until the aforementioned Kendo Stick is taken off the pole, and as soon as it is, the Kendo Stick can then be used as a weapon against your opponent. The feud between Bayley and Alexa has stalled in recent weeks and unfortunately this has been helped by what some people are calling one of the worst segments in Raw history.

I’m talking about the ‘This Is Your Life’ spoof which went down like a lead balloon. Hopefully if they’re given enough time on Sunday, Bayley and Alexa will make people forget about that god awful Raw segment. However, with Pole matches being traditionally poor in wrestling, my hopes are sadly not too high for this one. I can see Alexa retaining as she is a far more interesting character and there are plenty more feuds for her to get involved in with the title around her waist.

Prediction: Alexa Bliss

Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz (with Maryse) for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

ambrose_miz

So this one’s interesting. If Ambrose is disqualified for using any type of aggression deemed too extreme for ‘Extreme Rules’, he will be disqualified (you’ve got to laugh at this logic).

This feud has escalated over the past few weeks, with Dean Ambrose claiming he is the top champion on Raw in the absence of Brock Lesnar and his Universal Title. The Miz then got involved, stating that Ambrose is unfit to hold the prestigious Intercontinental Title. The reason for the strange stipulation in this match is that on the May 15th episode of Raw, Ambrose and The Miz faced off in a match for the Intercontinental Title and The Miz attempted a low blow on Ambrose behind the referees back. Ambrose countered the move and gave Miz a low blow of his own, which unfortunately the referee saw and allowed The Miz to win by DQ.

So, to make sure this doesn’t happen again, RAW General Manager, Kurt Angle made this stipulation. It will be interesting to see how Ambrose and The Miz bring the stipulation into the match as it wouldn’t be there if they weren’t going to use it in some way. With the stipulation being factored into the finish somehow, I expect The Miz to walk away with the title and hopefully these two competitors can move onto fresher feuds.

Prediction: New WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz

Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt vs. Samoa Joe in a Fatal 5- Way Extreme Rules Match. To determine the #1 contender for the WWE Universal Championship

fatal_five

In days gone by, you would look at these big multi-person matches and say, oh great a big old clusterf**k and it’s usually pretty obvious who is going to win. Well in a nice change of pace WWE haven’t given anything away and for once it’s not plainly obvious at all who is going to walk out of Extreme Rules as the #1 contender to Brock Lesnar’s Universal Title. Logically, you would presume it’s going to be Roman Reigns because if Roman fights, Roman wins. But with Roman winning two big matches against Finn Balor and Seth Rollins over the past few weeks, it surely can’t be him, can it?

Besides they aren’t going to do Roman vs. Brock II at a small Pay Per View; they’ll be saving that one for Summerslam or Mania 34. So, could it be Samoa Joe to win this one and have the biggest match of his career against Lesnar? Probably not! Don’t get me wrong, Joe is great, but he needs to build up a lot more momentum before a feud with someone on Lesnar’s level.

What about ‘The Eater of Worlds’ Bray Wyatt? If Bray was to win this match it would be great for him, but not for a second does anyone think he is going to beat Brock Lesnar, therefore I can’t see Bray winning this Sunday. Next we move onto Seth Rollins, who is finally starting to get some momentum as a babyface and if he was to win on Sunday it would, 1) send the crowd home happy and 2) move him into an interesting feud with Lesnar. They could then play off their previous history with one another, which makes this a very intriguing result indeed.

Finally we come to the man who is many people’s favourite to win on Sunday, Finn Balor. Finn has suffered a couple of defeats in recent weeks, but most intriguingly he was praised by none other than the advocate for Brock Lesnar himself, Paul Heyman. Will Balor win on Sunday setting up a David and Goliath program with ‘The Beast’? Unfortunately I don’t think so, as I see Bray and Finn going off and having a feud of their own. It looks as though there is a similar path set for Roman and Joe, which will keep all men busy for the next few months.

This leaves Seth Rollins as the only man left and a feud between him and Lesnar is something to get excited about as we head into the summer.

Prediction: Seth Rollins

Well we’ve blitzed all possible avenues and provided you with everything you could possibly want to know about Extreme Rules in Maryland. The only thing left to do is sit back and wait for the extreme event to kick off in the wee hours of Monday morning! Make sure to be on the look out for for our preview of WWE Money in the Bank, which takes place on June 19th. Until next time, keep it On The Mat!
