So just why did the so called “Big teams” fail this year in the Premiership? Well, apart from the fact that underdogs Leicester City have outplayed almost every side they’ve come up against. Leicester have also played with their heart and soul, treated every game as if it was a final. They have showed us that money isn’t everything, that through hard-work and utter passion, anything is achievable. Also put Tottenham into this category as well. This differs them from the top 4 or 5 in the league who seem to play with no passion and could care less about achieving anything, taking everything for granted. So we will be looking at each top team individually and trying to determine how they have failed in this 2015/2016 season.

ARSENAL

Surprise surprise, yet another season where we find ourselves discussing Arsenal’s fall from the title challenge mid-season. This has been the case for the past 6 or 7 seasons, where before Christmas they are in contention for the league and small talk begins of them pushing on to win the league. Then comes Mid-January early February, where all talk of them winning the title deteriorates like their form- this year especially. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why they have failed in the League this year:

Defence
Year after year now, Arsenals defence has been their main weakness, and I’m astonished as to how Arsene Wenger still has not dealt with this problem. Ask anyone as to why Arsenal have under performed and their defensive side of things will always come up. And even with the introduction of Petr Cech between the sticks this season(their only signing), they still find themselves off the pace of the league before the run in even begins. They just need one world class centre half and i feel they could challenge for the league. Being a keeper myself, the last defender i want in front of me is Per Mertesacker with his snail-like speed and inability to cope with the pace of a high intensity game. Other than Per, the likes of Koscielny, Paulista and Bellerin have actually performed well this year. They just need to invest in one top class defender to put a bit of steel into their defence. However, they’re not the only top team this year to have defensive problems.

Reliance on Key Players
Arsenal rely on Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil like fish rely on water, they can’t cope when it’s absent. And that is another reason for Arsenals downfall this season. It seems that if Ozil and Sanchez have a bad game, the team mimic this, under performing. Like any team, if your best players are underperforming, you may struggle. But, with Arsenal, nobody steps up, they lack leadership, motivation, probably their biggest downfall this season. They still lack a “20-25 goal per season” striker, with leading striker Olivier Giroud suffering an 11 game goal drought at the start of 2016. They still have not replaced Robin Van Persie who was that 25 goal per season kind of striker and who could win you games. Arsenal are lacking in leadership big time and they need to go out and invest in World class players who will grab this team by the scruff of the neck when they’re going through a slump.

CHELSEA

Where to begin. The reigning champions( for now) have crumbled beyond belief this season. From having the league wrapped up at Christmas last season to being considered relegation candidates at Christmas this season. It’s crazy what a year can do. The ‘Special one’ Jose Mourinho became the ‘Normal one’, then became the ‘Unemployed one’ following his sacking before Christmas. From losing to Arsenal in the community shield in the first game, to being kicked out of the Carling Cup by Bradford City, to being within 5 points of the drop zone before christmas. This has been a season to forget for Chelsea. So why have the Premier league champions performed like League one champions this season?

Defence
The whole Chelsea backline have suffered this season. Last season, they were a force to be reckoned with. Their defence was the reason for them winning the league. So what has happened? Well for one, Ivanovic and Terry’s leg are gone. Each team has targeted Ivanovic down that right side and 90% have done this successfully. This is where most of the goals are being conceded from. Terry is getting older now and is struggling with the pace of the game. Put a quick paced striker against him and the striker will always win( only this season). Cahill is also another player under-performing being dropped in place of Zouma.

Where’s Hazard?
How are you supposed to retain your title when the player of the year goes missing week in week out? Hazard has taken a huge fall from grace scoring 0 goals in the league and 4 goals in cup competitions this season. He’s not the able player being a shadow of his former self, with Cesc Fabregas following suit. Both players, seen as the top 2 in the team, have both under-performed massively leading to the rest of the team lacking in leaders and missing their two best players. Although Chelsea, improving hugely under Guus Hiddink, and on good form, they are still struggling to even make a European spot this season.

MAN CITY

I think there is only a few reasons Man City have failed this season. They started off the season flying. Then came the news that Pep Guardiola was taking over. Since then, they have fallen off the race for the title and seem to all lack motivation. It’s almost as if they have nothing to prove, new manager coming in, they don’t have that pressure surrounding them anymore. This has showed, with big names like Yaya Toure and Aguero not stepping up like they did at the start of the season.

Defence
Yes, like every one of their rivals, they also follow suit in their defence being their weak point. With Captain Kompany suffering numerous injuries, the replacements just haven’t been good enough. Demichelis and Otamendi have been abysmal in centre half conceding a goal every game. The oppositions prey on this and go and attack City as they know they are weak at the back. Zabaleta, once regarded as the best right back in Europe, is now a shadow of his former self.

And whenever Aguero is absent, they struggle for goals with Wilfried Bony being their only back up, and he has under performed since his arrival.

MAN UNITED

So many things have gone wrong for Man Utd this season. Injuries being a big thing , with Van Gaal having headaches over his selections missing key players throughout the year. Also, the philosophy that Van Gaal is trying to implement. Nobody seems to understand it. The players just don’t seem to understand his style of play. And with Fellaini as your go to guy for a late goal, you know there’s something wrong. Rooney has arguably had his worst season in a red shirt. All of these combined make for a terrible season for the club which is what we have seen.
