The Minifootball Association of Ireland & the 2018 European Championships: The Management Team – Part 2

By Emmet Switzer July 4, 2018 (No)
It is a dream for every sports person to represent their country, and a dream that often falls by the wayside as we get older. Many of us look out onto the pitch when we go to see an international game. The honest ones will admit that from time to time, we drift off into our own ‘Walter Mitty’ world, where we got the chance at glory. Time limitations, life pressures and lack of confidence in ability are often the reasons people don’t pursue their dream. These are also the causes behind people falling away from sport, even at a social level. Dreams Versus Reality The reality, though, is that […]

The Minifootball Association of Ireland & The 2018 European Championships: Where It All Began – Part 1

By Emmet Switzer May 27, 2018 (No)
It was 9 years ago when Emmet Switzer entered the board room of the FAI, in Abbotstown, to meet Packie Bonner of the Football Association of Ireland and Peter Doyle of the Leinster Football Association. They met that day to discuss potential opportunities between minifootball, known then as 5 a side, and the FAI. During the meeting, Peter slid a thick document across the table to Emmet, which turned out to be the general association rules. The Development Challenge Emmet was asked to review its content and come up with some ideas on how minifootball could integrate with the FAI, whilst complying with the UEFA/FIFA guidelines. No small task by […]

World Cup Qualifier Preview: Ireland v Serbia

By Evan Coughlan September 3, 2017 (No)
Despite drawing 1-1 against Georgia, Ireland still find themselves in with a chance of winning the group, however a play-off place does seem a lot more likely. Currently in second place, two points behind group leaders Serbia and two ahead of the group’s top seed, Wales, the Boys in Green have just three games left to secure their place in Russia next summer. Can Ireland do it? Well, here’s how we think Ireland’s tell-all game against Serbia will play out. Georgia v Ireland The less said about this game, the better to be honest. I mean, Ireland were on the back foot as soon as Shane Duffy’s header bulged the net and, […]

The 2017 Champions League Final – Preview

By Felipe Wasserstein June 3, 2017 (No)
The 2017 Champions league final will be played on June 3rd 2017 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Like it has been since the 2004-2005 edition, the tournament’s final will feature two teams from what many consider to be the four top tier leagues (La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga). In this case, the 11 time winner of the Champions League Real Madrid, play against the two times winner Juventus FC. The winner of the final will qualify to the semi-finals of the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup as the representative of UEFA. It will be the second time Real and Juventus played each other in a Champions […]

Can China Become A Serious Football Super Power?

By Andy Leech March 22, 2017 (No)
I don’t like to be a promoter of stereotypes, but there are certain things that spring to mind when we think of China. Chop sticks. Jackie Chan. Three-in-ones. That place that you wouldn’t willingly bring your dog. But, football? Nah, no way. I couldn’t think of anything less Chinese than the beautiful game, could you? Well maybe, I dunno, unpolluted air? (OK, I have realised that not only am I a promoter of stereotypes, I am also quite a racist.) The Green Eyed Monster But recently, China is one of the hottest topics amongst football fans. Astronomical money is being pumped into Chinese football, meaning that some of the best […]
