Holidays are approaching fast which leaves plenty of room to expand your library of films. There is something in this list for everyone and perhaps something new you never knew you liked. So, give it a good scan before you make up your mind on which of these treasures you are going to watch over the coming weeks. 1. Whiplash (2014)

Whiplash scored an amazing score of 8.5 out of 10 on IMBD. It was released in 2014 and follows the story of a promising young drummer that enrols in a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential. It is in the genres of drama and music and reviews have said that it is an emotional ride with lots of ups and downs and when you think it’s about to be finished it takes you on a brand-new ride around. Check this movie out if you are a music fan or are into gripping dramas.

2. Midnight in Paris (2011)

This film is for all the romance lovers as it dips into the genres of romance, fantasy and comedy. Scoring 7.7 out of 10 on IMBD, this film follows a nostalgic screenwriter who is on a trip to Paris with his fiancée’s family. Every night, however, he finds himself mysteriously returning to the 1920’s at midnight. Famous actors such as Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams star in this film. The film cast also includes three Oscar winners and people in the reviews certainly feel like it’s amazing as they describe it as a “movie of magic”. So, descend into this magical romance and get lost in the dreamy, picturesque scenes.

3. Nymphomaniac part 1 and 2 (2013)

Perhaps not the movie for everyone, Nymphomaniac follows the story of a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who recounts her erotic experiences to a man who saved her after a beating. In volume two this continues as we learn more and more about the woman’s life. Starring people such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LeBeouf and Uma Thurman. With a mega score of 64 from Metacritic this film is highly popular with audiences. Falling into the genre of drama. So, if you are looking for something a little bit out of the box then this might just be the movie for you.

4. Free Fall (2014)

This drama, romance comes from Germany and follows the story of a promising policeman who has a baby on the way. However, Marc discovers himself having a strange new ease when he meets a man on his jogs. Torn between his family and his new love for the man Kay, Marc sees his world falling apart. Soon he realises he cannot keep everyone happy so, what will he do? Scoring 7.6 out of 10 on IMBD this can make a perfect evening film that will have you going on a good emotional rollercoaster as you follow Marc in his day to day struggles through life. Watch with a loved one as you will find yourself reaching for the tissues with this one.

5.The Help (2011)

This heart gripping movie follows an aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960’s decides to write a book detailing the African – American maid’s point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through daily. Scoring an 8.1 out of 10 on IMBD. This drama has also won one Oscar, so it can definitely be one to keep on your list when looking for a film to watch. Inspiring and full of important messages this is one for the books.

6. Life of Pi (2012)

This adventure, drama, fantasy is based on a novel. This story has got a lot in store as a young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal Tiger. Scoring 7.9 out of 10 on IMBD and won four Oscars for this show. So, get ready to head off on this amazing journey if you are looking for a film this weekend.

7. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

This film has been nominated for five Oscars and has some famous actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie. Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort from his rise to a wealthy stock broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. Scoring an 8.2 out of 10 on IMBD, this movie is high on the popularity scale so if you are looking for a biography, crime, comedy then this might just be the movie from you.

8.Shutter Island (2012)

This film has 16 nominations and 9 wins for awards. This mystery, thriller is about a U.S marshal that investigates the disappearance of a murderer who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane in 1954. Perhaps the perfect film for this Halloween season as it will chill you to your bone thanks to the amazing directing of Martin Scorsese. With psychological mysteries intertwined within this movie you won’t find yourself blinking with excitement for what is going to take place next.

9. 50/50 (2011)

This drama doubles as a comedy and a drama as it centres around the life of a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. Based upon a true story this film has scored 7.7 out of 10 on IMBD. This film was also nominated 25 times, 2 of which were golden globes and won 12 awards. This emotional ride has actors such as Seth Rogan, Anna Kendrick and Joseph Gordon – Levitt. If you’re looking for a heart-warming experience, then this is the place to be. Grab some tissues as they might be needed and grab the remote.

10. Black Swan (2010)

This Oscar winning film is focused on a committed dancer who wins the lead role in the production of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan lake” only to find herself struggling to maintain her sanity. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis star as some of the main roles. The style of this film is brutal and uncompromising and promises a film that will have you gripping to your seats as it progresses. A drama and a thriller at the same time it gives you the tense feeling you are looking for.
