Is Tinder Now A Normal Part Of Dating?
May 1, 2019 (No Comments) by Tahlia Peppard

Not much is said nowadays about Tinder. It’s kind of fallen by the wayside, rarely mentioned but at the same time acknowledged. But don’t get me wrong, I think it’s still very much in use. Millennials make up 79% of users worldwide.

We thought Tinder is used just for your casual hook-ups, nothing really serious. Of course, there are the exceptions to the rule where people go on the dating app in search of someone they could see a future with – but trust me, these people are far and few between.

Although, 80% of users say they are looking for long-term relationships.

To answer the above question, I think Tinder and dating apps are more rapidly becoming a normal part of the dating life. This is due to many things, but the main reason being that our generation are more technologically advanced and we do everything through our phone, pay bills, store a bank cards, control your electricity/heating usage, watch Netflix and much more. So why not use dating apps in order to find ‘the one’ or at least someone to hold while you wait for the ‘the one’ to come along.

Tinder Explained

I’m sure there are not many people who don’t know what Tinder is, but just in case, I’ll briefly explain.

Tinder is a dating app used by people of all ages and sexualities. You basically have a profile, where you can add pictures of yourself along with a brief bio (these range from hilarious, to some having nothing at all) and you can state what you’re interested in. The app then puts your profile out there for people to view. This is usually done by location depending on your preferences.

You will then also be able to see other people’s profiles and you swipe right if you’re interested or left if you’re not. If the other person has swiped right too, you will instantly be matched, and you can start a conversation with them.

Don’t worry, if they weird you out, you can unmatch them.

The Pros and Cons of Tinder

Pros:

To remain positive, I will start with the pros of Tinder:

  • This type of dating works for people who may be very shy – it’s steppingstone in the right direction
  • It may give people a bit more confidence to freely say how they feel
  • You are given the option to unmatch someone or even report them if necessary
  • No phone numbers/addresses are listed in profiles
  • It allows you to meet people outside your social circle
  • It gives you a chance to practice your pickup lines
  • It eliminates small talk

Cons:

  • People can be mean and message you for the simple fact to tell you they don’t like the way you look etc (apparently this happens a lot)
  • It can be dangerous if you give out personal information
  • Tinder is appearance based, and this is tricky too. You never really know who you’re talking too
  • It encourages compulsive use. Average users spend 35 minutes a day on Tinder
  • Tinder has been hacked before – which means that hackers may have access to your personal information and pictures

Why Tinder may NOT be a normal part of dating

Like everything in life, there may always be a bad side to different things and the same goes for Tinder.

Although Tinder may be a normal part of dating now, there are still dangers and I myself have heard many stories of both men and women being targeted by the people they have matched or unmatched with.

This may make people a little more hesitant to broadcast themselves on a dating app.

With dating apps, it’s also very hard to judge the person you’re talking too – they may come across like a different person when you meet. This doesn’t confine to the ‘normal dating experience.’

Is Tinder now a normal part of dating?

To come full circle, is Tinder now just accepted as a normal part of dating? I think for the most part, yes, Tinder and in general dating apps, are now a normal part of dating.

People are less likely to go out and meet new people and find it easier to interact over a phone screen or computer screen. (Yes, I know, this is very sad)

Tinder is still very much in use and as we are always evolving technologically, I think dating apps will become more prevalent.
