Know When You Need to Get Away From the Needy Relationship

Remember that time your best friend got that insane girlfriend that he couldn’t be without if they were both off work/school/college? Remember how you felt about the fact that he was a complete non-entity in your life now and that he was a write off every time someone decided to plan a lad’s trip or night out?

Of course you remember it, it’s like losing a limb. But there are a few easy ways to know when you’ve fallen into the same trap. One that can be almost impossible to escape from; the needy relationship.

Go on a night out with the lads/girls and see how many times someone says something about you being on your phone. In this day and age everyone is on their phone non-stop so when somebody comes out with ‘Are you ever off that thing?’ or ‘I’m sure she’ll be all right for one evening’, then you know that you need to take a step back.

Another fun way can be to bring your girlfriend out with your friends. We’ve all seen those couples sitting in the corner of a nightclub/bar looking around and saying little or nothing. You probably noticed the misery on their faces and laughed but then you’re sitting in a corner of a nightclub with your other half looking on at all the drunkards. The two of you maybe even judge them a little bit but have you realised that you’ve become the miserable couple? If you can’t go your separate ways on a night out for any length of time, it’s because someone needs a bit too much attention.

We all wish we were 15 or 16 again when we used to be able to use unlimited calls and texts as we wanted in a month with Mammy or Daddy picking up credit for you once your 30 days was up. It was much easier than being bill pay just so that your phone was high end to help your professional life or just for show. When you see that bill coming at the end of the month and you’ve gone way overboard on your minutes and texts with all the traffic going to one number, it’s another sign that you need to re-evaluate. Someone in the relationship is needy, constant attention once again.

The biggest alarm for when you are in a needy relationship is when you argue constantly. I’m not talking about arguments over where your future might be going or about what movie you’re going to see. I’m talking about how you can’t make any decision, big or small, about your own personal life. When going to the pub with friends while your partner works turns into an argument about how you shouldn’t be out or having fun without them, you’re in trouble. It’s a two-way street, no person can expect to have freedom of control over their boyfriend or girlfriend like that. Personal space is healthy in any relationship.

This isn’t an advert for the single life, but have a think if you’ve started ticking all the boxes in your head.
