If there is one New Year’s resolution that you are guaranteed never to regret, it is looking after yourself and taking the time to maintain a healthy body and mind. We live in a world that is becoming increasingly pressurised and it’s easy to neglect our mental and physical wellbeing as a result.

Thankfully there will be plenty of special events set up around the country this year that can help everyone to hone these skills. The events differ greatly to cater for everyone so there can be no excuses! Check out some of the top health and wellbeing events on offer in 2018 and make minding yourself a guilt-free priority for once.

10) Freedom Fit: A Fitness and Wellness Festival

The Freedom Fit festival is a new initiative founded by The North Wexford Tourism Steering Group which will be taking place during the mid-term week in February. The initiative is being adopted by a variety of venues in North Wexford such as, Pirates Cove in Courtown and The Stables. The choice of events to attend is all yours with a variety of health and fitness activities for all ages available, many of which are low-costing or free.

You can expect horse riding, fitness classes, cycling, dance classes, healthy eating classes, meditation and massages. There will also be special activities for the kids including a colour run and an extreme challenge course. If you want a nice little break away with the kids, this festival sounds like the ideal way to get outdoors and have the craic.

9) Irish Natural Family Health Conference

Aimed primarily at parents who wish to incorporate greater family health at home, from physical to emotional, this two-day event in Dublin will offer expert advice on how best to achieve this. It allows parents to rub shoulders with some like-minded individuals who are also trying to help their family’s eating habits. Some of the expert advisors who will be in attendance include psychotherapist and author Stella O’Malley, Niamh O’Connell – Director of The Wellness Clinic for women, author of The Holistic Gardener blog and nutritionist Fiann Ó Nualláin and many more.

Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming Clair will be on hand to help participants master different exercises which will teach them to focus their mind.

7) Mind Over Matter Roadshow

Irish fitness blogger Emma Murphy recently featured on The Late Late Show to promote this fantastic Mind Over Matter event that she is hosting for women. Anyone who is familiar with Emma will know that she has put a lot of effort into spreading awareness about domestic violence. She has also managed to pull in over 50 million YouTube views and has grown her Facebook follower count to over 187,000.

Emma’s personal experiences have inspired her to organise this upcoming event. It is designed to help women connect and provide them with fitness, lifestyle and nutritional tips along with sharing knowledge and advice which will help unravel domestic violence in an intimate chat. Emma will also be demonstrating her Bespoke HIIT workout classes and conducting meet and greet sessions in the hope that the experience will help to empower women in their daily lives.

6) Dublin Dance Festival

The Dublin Dance Festival in association with The Abbey Theatre reaches out to young dancers with an ambition to express themselves through dance. In April, Open Studio will be taking place over four days in The Abbey Theatre. This event will experiment with different methodologies, workshops and seminars on how young people can connect through dance and live art. The results will be taken into account when creating future performances and further details of who they are looking for will be released in March.

After the Open Studio event, the festival will also be hosting some awe-inspiring performances during the month of May that will provide some much needed escapism. Akram Khan’s successful Giselle ballet and Patricia Guerrero’s award-winning flamenco show Catedral are examples of two of the big events to watch out for.

5) Wellfest

Renowned as Ireland’s largest fitness and wellness festival, Wellfest will be returning this year with a brand new location to help promote healthy living for the whole nation. In 2017, the festival sold out fast with a crowd of 5,000 people gathered in Dublin to seek advice and participate in the fitness and nutrition classes of some of the top national and international health champions.

Last year saw special guests vary from Gaelic footballer Enda McNulty to US yoga sensations The Southern Yogi and this year is said to get even bigger and better! The best part is that the event can be a fun day out for the whole family with a wide range of activities and classes for everyone. All activities are included in the ticket price and they sell out fast so keep an eye out!

4) Irish Aerial Dance Fest

What better way to loosen up and de-stress than getting to experience the Irish Aerial Dance Fest with some of our country’s most talented young performers. The festival is organised by Donegal-based aerial circus company, Fidget Feet, who are known for their unique and slightly mad performances. The company has performed in five continents at various national and international festivals and they are big advocators of the art blossoming in their native Ireland.

This year marks a double celebration for Fidget Feet as they are 20 years in operation this year and 2018 also marks 250 years of the Circus in general. Therefore they are bringing this special dance fest to mark the occasion and mentoring and classes are also open to the public.

3) Earthsong Camps

In our busy and stressful technology-dominated lives, many of you may have wondered what it would be like to just abandon everything and escape into the wild for a while. If a good old- fashioned hipster camping set up is what you had in mind, look no further. Earthsong provides a full-on camping experience where you can become one with nature whilst trying out some creative activities with fun-loving individuals. The Dance, Drum and Movement camp is the first event that Earthsong is hosting and over a period of 9 days participants will learn how to perform music and dance pieces from different cultures in a natural environment.

The new Awaken Festival organised by a team of leaders from various medical and performance backgrounds is said to be one of the biggest of its kind in the West and will send you home feeling rejuvenated. This festival will focus on satisfying the three pillars of mind, body and spirit in participants, connecting the areas through a series of activities and seminars.

There will also be a variety of well-known faces making an appearance in the form of some of our national fitness gurus who will be giving talks and classes to participants on one of the three areas. Some of the guests include Kathryn Thomas from Operation Transformation, Irish singer Bressie who is an advocate for positive mental health and suicide awareness as well as author and motivational speaker Alison Canavan to name a few.

For all lovers of music, this one is for you. Sunflowerfest is a three day music and arts festival up North which has tonnes of variety on offer for all the family. The festival will include face-painting and fun activities for the kids, cooking demonstrations, drama productions in the glade and special performances from some live music acts. Some of the artists who have performed in previous years include The Strypes, Gobstopper, Rubberbandits, local upcoming stars Ryan Vail and Damola.

This year the line-up is set to be just as creative but definite names have yet to be announced. There is also a special “bliss” area set up where activities such as meditation, dance, Tai Chi and yoga will take place, so there is a method of relaxation suitable for everyone.
