Don’t make us choose! The first of, 3 rounds! Put simply, that is not enough for this fight. The upcoming encounter between Tony Ferguson and Cowboy Cerrone is the people’s main event at this weekend’s UFC 238. It is exactly what the fans have wanted for a very long time. Why didn’t it happen in the past? Not too sure, but it is happening now.
The UFC 238 fight card was already in place. It already had two title fights in the card with Henry Cejudo taking on Marlon Moraes for the vacant Bantamweight title. The other fight at the top of the bill see’s Valentina Shevchenko defend her Flyweight title against Jessica Eye. It seems that the UFC brass did not think the card would do well PPV wise. Hence, why it was announced less than a month ago that a new fight would be added to the card.
Enter the dream fight of Tony Ferguson vs Cowboy Cerrone. Fans across the world went into meltdown with the announcement on social media, including myself.
Cowboy Cerrone just faced Al Iaquinta at Fight Night last month, and has a quick turnaround with the fight only 48 hours away. The cowboy has had a rebirth of success recently by winning his last three fights. He turned back the clock to prove to everyone that he is still in contender talks and looking better than ever in the octagon. The winner of this is without a doubt the next in line for a title shot and will face the winner of Khabib/Dustin at some point in the future.
It is important to remember that this is Tony’s first fight back since personal issues he experienced earlier this year. Now why is this fight so important to us fans? It’s simple really, these two fighters are fan favourites and the outcome to this bout will have a big impact on the Lightweight division. To fans, Tony is the rightful number one contender, having an 11-fight win streak. He was also the former Interim Champion before getting injured in the lead up to facing Khabib to unify the belts and was then stripped of the title because of it.
Tony and Cowboy is a fantasy fight that has come to life and the outcome is huge. Will Tony extend his win streak and finally get the shot at the title he so deserves? Or will Cowboy continue on his quest to Championship gold and show the world why he’s one of the best.
Both Fighters have a lot to gain and lose this weekend at UFC 238. Be sure to check it out and get ready for your emotions to run wild with this fight. I still haven’t decided who to pick yet. The more I think, the more I can’t believe this fight is happening. Don’t make us choose!
